“Perry…it’s you….”

by Warren

I thought the Steve Perry fan fiction debacle from about a month ago would be the first and last time the Journey frontman’s adventures would grace the pages of Freyburg. I thought wrong, as some madman has painted a picture of Steve Perry as Robocop.

Weekend updating will be sparse…

by Warren

I’m not only getting stories and pictures for the paper, I’m also cleaning up my apartment to get my damage deposit back, and my Dad is here helping out. So we’ll be running around like maniacs in preparation for the big slog to Victoria on Tuesday, and I won’t have as many chances to post ephemera and nonsense to the site as I’d like. But once I’m in Victoria and Vancouver, I’ll have a little more time on my hands to sass off in high style.

Alan Moore interview on the BBC

by Warren

I just can’t get enough of the greatest genius in comicdom, Alan Moore. Neither, evidently, can the BBC, who featured him on a show named Chain Reaction (sorry, it’s Realaudio). There’s also a transcript. I found this thanks to the always excellent Bookslut.

Episode III opening crawl

by Warren

Courtesy of the official site, here’s the opening crawl for Star Wars: Episode III. I think it sucks.

Nintendo going the way of Sega?

by Warren

Here’s an article about how Nintendo might go the “software only” route Sega was forced into after the Dreamcast tanked. I hope not; Nintendo may have been a bunch of power-mad jerks back in the day, but recently they’ve been real innovators in the console arena, and the Gameboy is still the king of the ring for portables.

I myself have a GBA SP, which is a great little rig for getting your retro game on. I’m in no hurry to get a Nintendo DS, but the second screen and other new features do show Nintendo is willing to try a few new ideas with its hardware.

Oscars 2005

by Warren

The nominees for the 2005 Oscars were announced this morning. I haven’t seen many of the nominees, though I have a few (ahem) stored away and a long plane ride ahead of me, so I’ll at least see “Ray” and “Sideways” before the big party at the end of February.

More importantly, the Razzies were also announced, with Alexander and Catwoman leading the pack. I actually have seen Alexander, though (ahem again) I didn’t pay for it, thank Xvid. Oliver really dropped the ball on his magnum opus, which is unfortunate, because he has made some stellar films in the past. One thing I really liked about the Razzies is that they managed to nominate most of the Bush Cabinet (and Bush’s pet goat!) for awards, thanks to Fahrenheit 9/11.

R.I.P. Johnny Carson

by Warren

I wasn’t the world’s biggest fan of the Tonight Show, but Johnny Carson was a very smart guy, and undeniably talented at what he did. The New York Times has a great (and long) obituary and retrospective.

History of Hip Hop

by Warren

The Guardian has a look back at 30 years of hip-hop. It’s a pretty interesting article, and I intend to use my p2p powers to compile the included “ultimate mix tape” listing. But I remember listening to rap back in the late 80’s and early 90’s and taking nothing but flack from my high school buddies for my apparent lack of taste in music. I recall they were “Hootie and the Blowfish” fans, but no matter. 🙂

I’m of the firm opinion that as a young’un, there are two or three songs that knock you flat on your ass and say “now listen to this, bitch!” One of those (for me) was Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit,” but the biggee was “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy. There was so much intelligence, anger and musical innovation packed into that tune I was blown away. Years later I got to see Public Enemy live, and it’s by far the best concert I’ve ever seen.

Now watered down and Wal-Mart friendly hip-hop is pretty much inescapable, though I’m willing to bet those same high school buddies are safely cocooned in “hits of the 80’s, 90’s and today (but no rap)” radio station bliss. 🙂
