Rumsfeld takes flak from troops (about time, too)

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld took a grilling in Kuwait from troops back from and headed to Iraq about the sad state of their equipment. Apparently the troops have been reduced to grabbing scrap metal from Iraqi junkyards and lashing together makeshift protection they call "hillbilly armour."

It's about time Rummy took some abuse for this insane misfire of a war. I'm also curious if troops have done this sort of thing before and it just hasn't been reported, or if the troops are really pissed off (as they have every right to be.)

I was lucky enough to actually hear the exchange on CBC radio yesterday, on The World At Six. (If you access the CBC link above today [Dec 9/04] you can listen to the Dec 8th show; the segment's about 15 minutes into the show.) The weasel-speak from Rumsfeld was unmistakable. The commentary mentioned that this hasn't really happened before; usually when they've done this, he's been lobbed a bunch of soft balls and it turns into a military pep-rally.

The roar of support after that first pointed question was exactly what I'd expected, but I don't think Rumsfeld's handlers did. What do you think - maybe he shouldn't be doing stuff to p*** off a bunch of people who have weapons and know how to use them?

There's a pretty good article on Slate about the fracas with Rummy, and how Bush is going way out on a limb by keeping him in the cabinet...

As for him pissing off people with guns, Americans might sass back once in a while, but they've got an unhealthy amount of respect for their leaders. They always act shocked when their president turns out to be a scumbag. Canadians just shrug and crack open another beer. ;)
