VOIP saves some tech writer a bundle of cash...

This guy saved a pile of money by consolidating all his telco needs into a VOIP Vonage account. I've saved a pile of money on long distance with my Primus VOIP box, but I'm tempted to move to Vonage. For one thing, I can cut my network box count by one by getting a router that does wireless networking and VOIP in one package (and might be able to go up to 802.11g with it.) Vonage also allows virtual numbers in the States, which might be useful if I try to freelance magazine articles at some point. It also has a softphone, so in theory I could pick up a Pocket PC (which, much as it pains me to admit it, have a better feature set than current Palm offerings, and cheaper) and have a universal phone number wherever I go provided I'm near a Wifi access point.) And you can check your voice mail over the web. Neat.

Then there's the Skype option, though that seems to make more sense for travel. Lillerant, you have Vonage....get ranting!

If you wanted to be really "cool", you could find a rechargeable battery pack with the right amps for the Vonage router/gateway and actually use the thing cordlessly anywhere...

BTW, next week when you come out to Van, the Blenz at Robson and Bute has free wireless now... and pretty decent green tea lattes and frappucinos, too... we should hang out there for a bit on Saturday or something...

I'm cool with that. Gonna try me a green tea frappucino. Of course, to truly appreciate this Vancouver innovation, you have to consume it during a hot yoga class, wearing only Lululemon made entirely of hemp. Oh yeah, and try to vote against something...it doesn't really matter what. :)

I think if they made Lululemon out of hemp in this town, people would just smoke the clothes... although for what one of their track suits cost, you could probably afford more expensive drugs... :)
