Why Japan gets all the neat gizmos...

Here's an article about the underlying reasons why Japan get all the whiz-bang toys, and we generally don't. It's not a completely accurate article (see Cam's take on it here as a former long term Japan livin' expat) but it does sort of explore the deep gizmo love of the Japanese more than the usual "woo boy them cell phones is nifty" article.

Having been there twice, I can attest to both the glory of their cell phones and their supertoilets. :)

As an avid and excellent blogger you might be interested in a new book on Japan that features the blogging phenomena and how they add "insights into life, society and culture from a variety of perspectives."
The book is called Extremes: Contradictions in Contemporary Japan and is by a chap called G M Thomas.
I bought it on amazon.co.uk where it is a hot-pick for books on Japan and is in the Top Ten. I also saw it was available on amazon.co.jp as a recommended read.
It too talks about gadgetry in Japan and what drives Japanese (the women in particular) to be huge consumers.
