RSS goodness

I installed a small, free program called Newsfire on yonder Mac last week, and so far I'm pretty pleased with it. Newsfire reads RSS feeds, which isn't all that different from a bunch of other programs. But it's built with OS X in mind, and it has lots of nice features ike smart feeds and an unobtrusive interface that just makes sense.

I used to use NetNewswire, but it just isn't as well put together as Newsfire. Marsedit, their blog tool, is another story entirely. Marsedit makes posting to my blog one hell of a lot easier to contend with, instead of mucking around with slow as dirt web interfaces. (Please ignore my lazy non-posting yesterday. :) )

I decided to get on the RSS bandwagon for four reasons; for one, my site now has its own feed, so it seemed stupid not to. For another, I can check out Flickr photos from all over the world without plowing through the site. It also makes checking blogs a lot simpler, and lets me check Bittorrent feeds to see if any interesting media is falling through the cracks.

And for you PC guys, don't despair. I found a list of small apps that make your lives easier. Well, as easy as they can be with a Microsoft product. :)

I like Thunderbird for RSS... it's not the most fully-featured newsreader out there, but it does have one advantage: I always have it running. Every other newsreader I tried was pretty good, but after a while, I stopped using all of them because it was an extra step to load them up. With Thunderbird, I can scope the latest changes to Freyburg.com right after checking my mail...

Yeah, I just keep Newswire up all the time. When you don't use it, it fades to semi-transparent and kicks in when you go back to it.
It's hands down better designed than the other OS X RSS readers out there.

But if I was running XP, I'd probably run Thunderbird too.
