Andy Rooney lets loose on Iraq

Andy Rooney, the 60 Minutes curmudgeon, is best known for complaining about life's little irritants, often to the great amusement of all concerned. But every once in a while he lets loose with a serious broadside that reminds you this guy, for all his "funny old crank" image, was a foreign correspondent in World War II, worked with many of the legends of broadcast journalism, and was one of the first Americans to witness the Nazi death camps up close. In other words, no slouch in the jourmalism department, and certainly worthy of listening to if he's got an opinion about something substantial. He's lashed out with a diatribe about the cost of the Iraq War, in money and lives. There's also video, which is the best way to appreciate Rooney.

It's finally nice to see someone make a stink about the massively inflated US military budget. When NASA says they want to go to the moon, everyone says they can't afford it, but never contemplate maybe sending 50 tanks to mop up a few dozen insurgents, rather than 60.

I was driving through Tucson, Arizona in the summer of 2003, and happened upon Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. I was astonished to see, quite literally, hundreds upon hundreds of fighter jets parked in the grounds of this place. It was almost terrifying, and a slap in the face to someone who had maybe seen 5 such jets at one time at an airshow in Red Deer in the 1980's. Who needs all those planes? Oy vey. Way to go, Andy.

Yeah, I was pretty happy to see a guy like Rooney, who's a bit of a sacred cow and can't be touched, give the business to the Bush administration for their futile, divisive war.

And he's right; you know we'll hear stories of graft and skimming off the top years from now, as just another insult to add to this sad chapter of history.
