Too much junk?

Most of us have mountains of crap accumulating in closets and junk drawers. I've managed to avoid this quandry by moving three times in the last two years, and almost going overseas before finding a gig here in Vancouver. As a result, I have very little beyond some books and a computer, but back in the day my house was crammed to the gills with useless junk. Here's a column lamenting America's (and ours, let's be honest) habit of consuming to the point of suffocation.

On a related tangent, go check out Adbusters. A friend of mine just joined the staff, so the more eyeballs she gets, the better.

Damn straight! I've moved a lot too, so I've managed to keep the junk to a minimum, but even I'm trying to cut down...

Staying with my in-laws in Japan, you'd notice it's not just North Americans who have this problem... the world's number 1 hyper-consumer society is bad too, and the houses in Japan don't generally have basements, which makes for a lot of stacking.

My mother-in-law said she just recently realised how big of a problem over-consumption is... I'm lucky that I've moved a lot and figured it out at a relatively young age, I guess... hopefully I'll stay ahead of the game.

Having said that, we have two unused computers at home now that see very little change of getting any use whatsoever, and I still feel the urge to hang on to them. :)

Yeah, I understand not wanting to ditch the computer. I'll have a hell of a time when the Intel powerbooks come out, as I'll be filled with lust, and I'm sure there'll be some cool features...but then I'll have two old laptops sitting around. Right now the ibook makes a fine bittorrent machine, and the powerbook does everything else.

Meh, I'll just wait for the six-month revision (probably summer 2006), at which point the bugs will have been ironed out and my powerbook will now be slow enough to justify getting a new beast....:)
