Wired gets back to basics...

...with over-the-top optimism about the technology industry. Apparently there's no bubble, just a boom. Given these were the same guys to say the Dow would never go down (right before it did), I'd take this with a grain of salt.

Ah Wired, how we miss those crazy days...

We have to link to the real jewel in the Wired crazy boom forecasting crown though, their "long boom: history of the future" article... it's one of the greatest works of (unintentional) comedy of the 20th century.

Predictions include gold like:

" By about 2005, animals are used for developing organs that can be donated to humans. Superproductive animals and ultrahardy, high-yielding plants bring another veritable green revolution to countries sustaining large populations."

also:

"By 2005, technology previously confined to aircraft's onboard electric systems successfully migrates to automobiles. These cars use natural gas to power the onboard generators, which then drive the electric motors at the wheels. They also make use of superstrong, ultralight new materials that take the place of steel and allow big savings on mileage."

Well, that's almost starting to happen... however, it goes on to a plethora of other loopy gems such as predicting that around now, China would be on the brink of civil war as the rich yuppies in the coastal cities and the poor inlanders go at it, predicting that Japan would totally open its protected markets by 2000 (It's just barely starting to now), a free trade agreement unifying the entire American hemisphere, an overabundance of tax revenue in the US, by 2002 being used to start solving problems like drug addiction (bet nobody was thinking about Iraq II when they wrote that!), the 2000 US election being all about revamping the education system, radically revamping the US goverment by 2010, and... oh... damn, there's too much to repeat... just read the whole thing and laugh your ass off:
