Star Wars TV series....zuh?

So Lucas just can't put the crack pipe away. He's making a Star Wars tv series, and it's going to be set in the 20 years of Luke Skywalker's life before he heads off to blow up the Death Star.

Eh? Let me get this straight. Dodging around the fact that a Star Wars tv series is kind of pointless to begin with, why focus on something so fundamentally boring? Is the whole show going to be set on Tatooine? And what the hell does Luke do before he hits the big time as a Rebel champion? Get into fist fights with Jawas? You'd think with all the potential backstory the series could draw on (formative years of the Empire, buildup towards the Rebellion, politics on Coruscant, Empire hunting down various species that cheese them off like Wookies, etc..and that's just off the top of my head), they could come up with something better. But apparently, this is not the case. Meh.

Doctor Who is, and will be, much better. What a shame that only two people who post here truly care about the show. Sigh.

Well, at least Slate agrees.

When all else fails, stick to what you know... ie. "Young Indy on Tatooine". Look for young Luke to meet such historic figures as a younger Jabba, a younger Greedo, and... um.. Obi T.E. Wan Lawrence?

The Star Wars TV show will become the "Star Trek : Enterprise" of the franchise. Predicting 100 episodes before they even shoot a frame? Gosh, how brash. And stupid.

Yeah, I'm not impressed. Of course, I'll download the damn thing same as everyone else, but based on what I've seen here, it's kind of a stupid idea. The 100 episode thing is probably based on the fact that they can shoot most of it green screen or on some desert location, presumably Death Valley, like they did with Jedi. Tunisia looks better (Lucas himself said so, to explain why he went back there for the prequels) but for a TV show, nobody's gonna care. The other reason they can probably pull off 100 episodes is the digital factor. They've had three movies (and all the hooey before the prequels) to figure out their new way of making films, and now they can ramp it up to episodic tv, which is traditionally a meat grinder. Lucas doesn't like working like that, so they'll probably make it so they can shoot at a more relaxed pace and still put 10 shows together at once. None of that will make it a better show, mind you.

Unless this turns out to be as good as the BSG, this could turn out to be one of the worst ideas in his career, and he has had a lot of them.

I'm sorry, Star-what? I stopped paying attention long ago; when it still had a semblance of a soul.
