Radio Free Skaro #9

And...we're back! Or rather, we never left, but we've got a semi-new theme song, new album art, and most importantly, a new show to talk about! Steven and I delve into the mystery that is Torchwood episodes 1 and 2, and then ramble on about the show's stellar ratings, the demise of Outpost Gallifrey, and the less than amazing numbers for Season Two's debut on the CBC. Whee! (feed, web, direct download)

Something appears to be amiss... download attempts have thus far proven futile for episode 9. I've been attempting to grab it for most of the day, not yet succeeding in doing so. It's timing out all over the place, going slowly when it does transfer... I started one download attempt almost 4 hours ago, went to a movie, and it was under 10% complete 3 hours later. Is libsyn just really, really bogged down today perhaps?

Okey dokey, I've given episode 9 a listen... another fine job guys, thanks for the half hour of fun!

Thanks for the plug as well, but I was slightly misquoted... indeed I'm not a fan of Russell T Davies' writing, simply because I don't find him to be a good storyteller. He's wonderful when it comes to characters (I haven't seen "Bob & Rose" but "The Second Coming" is a great example of that ability) and writing ("Casanova" is wonderful in that department), but his story structure is simply ineffective. I'm not sure if it's because he has the EP credit that he can wave around demands such as the script editor can't alter his work, or if his head writer hat wields that power, or what, but I can't think of anything he's done that's had a full and effective storyline.

I may be too used to the three-act setup of American movies, and maybe I don't watch enough British TV in case his style is now the norm over there, I'm not sure.

Anyway, Russell Davies is going to be around for a long time yet (assuming Torchwood and Doctor Who continue, and the latter is certainly likely to remain) so I'll just have to deal with his involvement.

I'll close by saying this: In a recent Doctor Who Magazine article, it was mentioned (implied?) that Steven Moffatt had a clause in his contract preventing tampering with his script. I find it to be no coincidence that his stories are arguably the best (or nearly the best) of each of the first two series for the new show. =)

Also, relative to Steven's remarks about Outpost Gallifrey closing down, there are a couple sites I've been told about which will hopefully fill the gap collectively... neither alone is as good as OG, alas.

http://21stcenturydoctorwho.com/

Those, plus the news page at the BBC site, will hopefully let us know the details we need.

The BBC site is getting better at distilling news. DW Online has become my main site for news now, although I get easily lot within the links to the stories on their site.

Episode 3 of Torchwood has been viewed and I must say it was very enjoyable. It was Helen Raynor's (DW script editor) episode and had the nice halloween(ish) theme to it. Good drama, good acting, good writing and direction. Much more enjoyable than the earlier episodes.

And next week we get to see the Cyberman chick from the trailers, that should be fun. Plus it's supposed to focus on Ianto which will be nice as he's really not been in the episodes much.

(I don't know why, but Ianto -- so far -- reminds me heavily of Richie Rich's butler. Anyone who remembers the 80s cartoons may know what i mean. He shows up when needed, sometimes to save the day, but otherwise isn't around.)
