Radio Free Skaro #13...and happy birthday, Doctor Who!

We broke the one hour mark on the latest podcast, what with our review of the Children in Need concert, the latest Torchwood episode, and extended notstalgic reminisences of Who gone by, and our many and varied experiences growing up with the show. And we included some of our favorite selections from the concert to liven things up a bit. Ah, good times. And and AND...it's the good Doctor's 43rd birthday. He's looking good for someone sidling into middle age. But enough of my idle talk, go get the show! (feed, web, direct download)

Nice plug for the 10-0 con in the show. I'm still listening to the podcast, but I've stopped so I can set things straight about that con. Who knows, I might be doing this prematurely as you guys might have said things correctly after the spot where I paused.

Anyway, the con was in 1988. It was to celebrate 25 years of Who, put on by the 10-0-11-00 by 02 from Galactic Centre, Club (they had to add the club bit when it was turned into a society under the law rather than a loose affiliation as it was before that). John Levene was the guest... the SOLE guest as it happened. I was 13 at the time, and really didn't know any better so it was a hoot for me to be there. There was even a trivia contest where there was this huge (like 6-8 IIRC) bank of Apple ][ computers running this custom-written software... those who scored the best got to move onto the semi-finals where they had two Jeopardy-style rounds with 3 contestants apiece. Being a young buck at the time, I soundly got my butt kicked by my opponents in my round (yep, I was one of the ones to get to the semis... but then again, at one point there was an open call at a 10-0 meeting for trivia question submissions, and I submitted I don't know how many dozen, so the pool of questions for the preliminary round was quite familiar to me).

On a related note, one of the other contestants from the semis had recently been turned up by a friend of mine as a writer for scifi.com and a total Mac geek. His name is Peter Paschal, and I hadn't thought of that name in nearly 20 years until the other day. Strange timing, small world, etc.

Steven -- yes, ITV did a bit on the con... I'm trying to remember the name of the reporter who was there and I can't. It was Graham something is all I can recall. I have a portion of the report on VHS somewhere, but I have no idea where it is. It's on some random tape, and I really don't expect I'd ever find it again even if I looked. Graham Richardson? Could be.

Anyway, there was a retrospective video released for/of the con, running about 2 hours or so. I actually rewatched it last fall or something on a whim, and wow did the con suck when I looked at it then. Age and perspective and all that.

K, back to the podcast. It's paused at about the 46 minute mark, so I might have more to yammer on about after I've finished the last quarter. =)

OK, in checking my IM logs, here's the page that a friend (from the 10-0 days) found about Peter Pachal: http://www.bornrich.org/entry/peter-pachal-cool-geek-of-the-week/

For sh*ts and giggles I've thought of trying to find an email address for Peter and sending a note to say hey, but I've not yet done so. Too bad that article has no DW mention... perhaps he's in denial? =)

Last little bit... you guys remarked that nobody had emailed or commented about their plans for November 23, so I'll chip in with my plans. I'm not going to start at any particular time or set up a schedule, but I'm going to be catching up on the DVD releases I've not yet gotten to. Those amount to merely the two newest releases (Hand of Fear, Mark of the Rani) which I've been saving for the 23rd, but also Web Planet which I've not yet had the courage to watch (I have not-so-fond memories of it from youth when I first saw it). Between those and the bonus features, it should fill a good chunk of the day.

And Steven, good idea about watching Dalek Masterplan. I grabbed the reconstruction a while back as well and have yet to get to it. It's slightly disappointing there wasn't a copy of Mission to the Unknown amongst the Masterplan episodes (at least not with the copy I got; it was just the main 12 episodes) so that it was technically complete, but I do look forward to watching it at some point. I watched the reconstruction of Evil of the Daleks a couple months ago and didn't mind the soundtrack overtop still frames too much, so I think I could handle the 9 reconstructed episodes for Masterplan at some point.

Happy b-day, Doctor Who!

It's 11:20, and I'm halfway through "Day of Armageddon". part 2 of DMP. I'm following along by reading the scripts located at this site :

http://homepages.bw.edu/~jcurtis/Scripts/scripts_project.htm#THE%20SCRIPTS

I watched "Mission to the Unknown/Dalek Cutaway/DC/T/A" a while back...but I don't need to make the marathon any longer. And yes, I seem to recall it was Graham Richardson who did the ITV story. They also used clips from that Saturday's episode that ran on KSPS...which happened to be the oh so current "Spearhead From Space" (which was also the first time I had ever seen the story).

Damn, I haven't had time to watch anything, saddled as I am with work and then more after-work work....after work. :) Maybe I'll do a best-of insta-compilation via Youtube in my office. :)

I was up until after midnight last night splicing together the podcast...does that count? :) I aslo noticed after it was done there's a slight screw up in the end music...but meh. It's out there, and my word did we jabber on.

I had completely forgotten about the Apple II trivia thing...programed by Vlad, I believe.

Scifi.com, eh? This writer is intrigued...:)

It might have been Vlad, it might have been Steve, it might have been Blaine, I don't recall who set up the Apple ][ boxen. It was cheesy as heck but wow was it fun.

Vlad did a whack of compilation videos (as he still does now for Anime stuff), I know he did at least that for content contribution (over and above his behind the scenes work)...

The Day of the Daleks almost done. Jon Pertwee has never been cooler than in this. Using his akido on the guerilla, in between sips of wine...brilliant!

I've finally finished the three DVDs... it takes a fair amount of time to get through those given the lengthy supplements. I didn't even get to the commentaries and it's already so late.

Good day of Doctor Who though... Mark of the Rani didn't kill me, and watching Hand of Fear gave me the overwhelming urge to watch School Reunion, which I'll be doing right away.

Well, I've never been able to make it through a planned DW Day marathon in the past, and it looks like I'll bail again this year...I'll go till the end of Survival, but then it's beddie bye for me. It's quite something to begin the day with "An Unearthly Child" and end it with the last episode ever from the original run. It actually feels like 26 years have passed between them today...

You did have quite the ambitious day planned, so making it through 7 Doctors is a good showing -- especially when you consider the first two stories combined are almost longer than you'd spend on the other 8 Doctors.

I planned on 3 stories and got to 4, so I'm satisfied with my results. Too bad doing so really cut into my Lego Star Wars II and catching up on other TV stuff time. Oh well, there's always tomorrow before BSG airs.

Warren, did you end up getting any DW content watched today (podcast editing aside, that is)?
