Bruce Sterling puts out a "
state of the world" (in glorious ASCII) on
the Well, one of the net's oldest gathering places, every year. It's always a good read, and this year is no exception. And I'd also like to point out that I got my start with the Internet back in the dark days of the 1980s on the Well, racking up my dad's monthly bill and expostulating to the Bay Area's resident ex-hippies and smart folk. Ah, good times. :)
