Radio Free Skaro #17

It was a banner day for Doctor Who spinoffs on the first rotation of the Earth 'round the sun of 2007, with the Torchwood finale and the first episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures hitting English shores (and, shortly thereafter, everyone's computer). We've got reviews of both episodes, plus a look back at Torchwood as a whole and the usual meandering about stuff and nonsense. (feed, web, direct download)

I'm toying with the idea of watching every episode of Doctor Who, in order, from start to finish, 1963-present. Over the course of a few weeks, obviously.. Maybe I would be up for discussing some classic stuff after all that.

Well, I'm not against the idea of bringing in guests to co-host, or me trying to get some interviews with people connected (however tenuously) to the show, etc. Any other ideas, loyal listeners?

If I actually had anything worthwhile to contribute, I'd certainly volunteer to join in the fray (no pun intended). =)

I've not yet listed to #17, I assume the comments here have something to do with the content in the episode.

More to do with the fact that there's not much in the way of new Who to discuss for the next few months, as Torchwood is done and the Sarah Jane Adventures isn't showing up until the fall. So we're going to have to go back into the show's illustrious history. Luckily there's plenty of stuff to choose from in that regard.

Understood. 3 months and change for Doctor Who, 9 months and change for Torchwood and however long for Sarah Jane adventures, and the K-9 spinoff seems to be in limbo for now. That's going to be quite the drought to cover.

Neither of you seem to be buying the novels coming out (not that I blame ya!), so while there's new content on that front you can't cover what you don't know (though the new Terrance Dicks Cyberman book is only a couple months away or so).

Yup, that leaves going over past content and/or leaving longer between episodes to compensate for that. Steven's idea of going from the beginning is valiant to say the least, but a huge investment of time (job or not... I've been unemployed for 5 months now and even I wouldn't undertake watching everything start to finish). Of course, the biggest detractor to going from the beginning is Warren's aversion to black & white Who.

You've not covered all the DVDs yet, and if you're going to go to the past episodes I would think starting with the DVDs would make the most sense. Go with what people would have ready access to rather than something obscure or which hasn't aired in a decade or more.

Or, for the sake of being different, perhaps go over something obscure (eg. a reconstructed story; I've only watched Evil of the Daleks for reconstructions and it was quite well done, and hopefully other reconstructions are decent). Obviously everyone who listens to the podcast has internet access, and it's not all that hard to get hold of pretty much anything you want given enough lead time, so if you pick a story or two for episode 19 and announce it in episode 18, some of the faithful may hunt down said story/stories.

Overall, it's going to be tough coming up with content unfortunately... unless a bunch of new news comes out in sufficient quantities to fill half an hour a week or every two weeks (and that's unlikely at best).

Perhaps the idea of bringing in a guest for episodes during the lean time would be a good idea. It would offer another perspective on whatever classic episode(s) are chosen.

Well there is always the Audio Adventure that you guys could talk about if you start hurting for content.

The Big Finish stuff is definitely an option as well.

The biggest problem I'd foresee with that is the lack of canon for the Big Finish stuff; the same of course applies to the novels as well.

Here's a thought which sweeps away the canon issues, kinda: do a review on "Spare Parts" (which was kind of the impetus for "Rise of the Cybermen"/"Age of Steel") or Paul Cornell's "Human Nature" (allegedly the basis for his 2-parter in series 3, where The Doctor becomes human). There's at least a modicum of canonical content with those two stories. Ditto "Jubilee" by Robert Shearman (which was sort of the basis of "Dalek"). It's probably stretching things a bit, but it's a thought.

The Big Finish dramas should easily be available via torrent sites (I know I've used Demonoid in the past for them); alternately, I keep an archive of them and can easily send you guys what you need if you want to go that route.

I know I stopped buying the New Adventures well into their run, stopping reading them probably well before "Human Nature" (#38), and if all my books weren't in storage I could check to see if I had that one and loan it to Steven (if needed) since he's at least in the same town (silly Warren for moving to the left coast!). Oh well, I can't get at the darn things to find out anyway.
