It remains to be seen whether or not they'll actually pull this off, but supposedly Vancouver is going to get a city-wide wireless network up and running, presumably before the Vancouver Olympics. I'm sure how far out it'll extend, but since I live in the downtown core I'm reasonably certain I'll do just fine on the "always-on" front. I doubt the connection will be good enough to give up on cable (and my provider does fiber so I won't be leaving its sweet, torrent-sucking folds anytime soon), but this news, combined with the impending iPhone, is most welcome.
I'm sure it's not going to be very high-capacity, but enough bandwidth to support VoIP would be sweet...
I've always said this town is perfect for this sort of connectivity... high-density small-footprint urban core, masses of tech workers, coffee shop culture... we've got the right mix.
We're still in the midst of our "5 Years of Wonderful Dial-Up" celebrations here in Edmonton, so I don't foresee the City of Champions following Lotusland's lead anytime soon.
Well the Mayor of Edmonton would like to see the Downtown area become a wireless access point.
Don't know if its ever going to happen.
