Going to New York in a few weeks....

...and getting mighty excited. Anywhere in particular (other than the obvious tourist spots) we should check out during the week we're there?

Jazz at Lincoln Centre. Very cool, very romantic, and not super expensive.

Go to the early sitting at Dizzy's and you can head out on the town afterward. The backdrop for the band stage is Central Park, and the food is pretty good too.

Our friend lives a block away from this place in the East Village (see below). On our way back to her place on our first night in New York, we stopped in to see a psycho-rockabilly band putting on a pretty good set. It's a little off the beaten path, but if there is a band playing there I would highly recommend a visit. The entire East Village is cool - especially in the evening when the bars and restaurants open.

Otto's Shrunken Head Editorial Review – by Erin Behan

The Scene
Every inch of the long narrow space screams kitschy tiki bar. Light-up blowfish lanterns, leopard-print bar stools, Hawaiian-inspired wallpaper, shiny red leather banquettes, faux grass edging, a "Simpsons" pinball machine--newcomers will need a strong mai tai to help soak it all in. The laid-back punk and rockabilly crowds who frequent the place most often have a beer in hand, but that shouldn't intimidate you from exploring the fun and tasty drink menu.

The Draw
This lone bar on a quiet stretch of 14th Street is a chameleon. One moment, punk bands shriek from the back stage; the next, CD DJs mix up '80s and early-'90s ballad rock. Popular weeklies--which range from industrial gothic punk nights to acoustic jam sessions but vary night to night--include comedy shows on Wednesdays. Every night, you'll find friendly bartenders and potently sweet tiki drinks. Try Otto's Octane, a careful mix of pineapple rum, Kahlua and banana liqueur.

If that cultural crap gets tiring you could always go to a Daily Show taping; they have a few open spots in mid-April...

It's been a long time since I've visited, but my two favourite things in Manhattan were:

1) The Morgan Library and Museum:
http://www.morganlibrary.org/

2) The Cloisters:

The latter is less special since I've seen a lot of superior stuff along the same lines in the past decade, but it's in a pretty neat part of the city and affords some great views.

Skip the Daily Show, it's an hour of "cultural crap". Take to the next level and see my boy Maury (http://www.mauryshow.com/tickets.html). Mel will love it!

Make sure you go to the Met. It's very cool. Also take an afternoon and check out Central Park. Bring lots of money. That is one expensive city. You're going to love it, though.
