Radio Free Skaro episode 31 - Gridlicious

Warren and Steven are back and waxing lyrical on the brilliance that is "Gridlock", an episode that had every appearance of being a throwaway bit of fluff but instead turned into a slam-bang roller coaster ride, with one of the finest bits of acting David Tennant's put into the role thus far. Great effects, imaginative characters, humor and some genuinely moving moments make for one of the best bits o' Who in the new series. Lovely! Next week, the Daleks invade Manhattan, as does Warren. We'll probably skip the podcast next week and double up to cover both Dalek episodes at once. (feed, web, direct download)

Wow, a Paradise Towers dig AND a Silver Nemesis dig. Catty. =)

I'm not going to rewatch the episode before the premiere gathering, although I'm very very tempted to listen to the commentary after you guys mentioned some of its highlights, but you know what? You've changed my mind about Gridlock. I can't consider it the best yet of the season, I think Smith and Jones holds that honour still, but after hearing the podcast and your thoughts, I'm going to revise my opinion of it upward. I gave both it and The Shakespeare Code a 3 on the OG forums, but Gridlock is going to go up a notch, above Shakespeare Code, on my season ranking list.

You guys hit upon some points which, in retrospect, were perhaps better than I gave them credit for in the first place.

The teaser for Daleks in Manhattan at the end of Gridlock didn't give me warm fuzzies, neither did the other trailer released today. I don't look forward to it...

Nice to hear the audio gremlins are gone.

The woman whose name you forgot around the 17 minute mark was Lenora Crichlow who I mentioned the other day from Sugar Rush. PAY ATTENTION! =)

Panaka is most definitely not American... I've not looked at other cast members from the Dalek two-parter, but I can't imagine many guest actors would be non-British. They may have ex-pats though.

Oh, and, yes I have Shark Attack 3: Megalodon sitting here and ready to go come Sunday. I have zero desire to watch it; I chiefly grabbed it for a laugh (though I did give jabberwocky a copy when I saw him yesterday) but I can't imagine we'd watch it. As it stands I'm not sure anyone other than myself, Jean-Paul and Steven even realized the reference (unless others here saw JB on Jonathan Ross last fall). And the key line mentioned on Rossie is of course on youtube, all by its lonesome. Search for it and you'll not have to look too hard.

Steven, just a heads up regarding what'll be going down come Sunday... as I emailed to you, we'll meet for lunch then go to someone's place to watch the episodes. Hopefully the 27" TV there will be enough for those of us in attendance to enjoy the shows (I'm too used to using my big screen, personally :) ). We'll definitely be going through the first four episodes, and myself and/or Jean-Paul will have other goodies there should anyone care to partake of extra things.

I'll bring Shark Attack 3, but I don't expect we'll watch it (as noted above). We'll have the Graham Norton show with Tennant as well (when Mike stopped by yesterday, I thought he was going to die from laughing at it so much), plus other odds and sods.

And considering we know what you look like from your RFS media/publicity still, I've realized that since you've met none of us you won't know us, and Warren won't be there to point me out. =)

If you happen to arrive at BP's after us, you can of course look for the table of nerds (oh, we are nerdy!) on the restaurant side, or one of us may spot you. If I happen to be standing (say, waiting for the table or others to arrive) when you get there, you'll not miss me (I'm nearly 7' tall, I'm hard to miss).

We have 5 folks confirmed, counting yourself (myself, Jean-Paul, Gary who's hosting, Jean-Paul's brother, and yourself), with at least three others still undecided last I checked.

I've just finished Gridlock with commentary, I simply couldn't resist it. What an absolutely wonderful commentary, among the best I've listened to in a while. So fun, so informative, lots of admissions of theft (er, 'homages') by RTD. =)

Seriously though, that was definitely worth a listen. Thanks for mentioning it in the podcast guys, otherwise I might never have listened to it.

Where is this trailer of which you speak? I poked around the BBC site (Boo hiss, Realmedia postage stamp) and couldn't find it.

It's the regular 20- or 30-second spot that gets run throughout the week. It ought to surface on the torrent sites soon enough I'd imagine. It has a few scenes not shown in the trailer after Gridlock, but not much.
