Who are all these people wandering around from 9 to 5?

A very good question, once I've asked numerous times in downtown Vancouver, which appears to be full of the rich and indolent. But things aren't always what they seem, as this article from the San Francisco Chronicle on the "daytime idle" demonstrates.

Yeah, I've had a week off and nowhere to go and wondered myself who all these lazy bums on patios were, whittling away their daylight hours. One theory, particularly in my neighbourhood, is that they're actors who hit it quasi-big with a speaking role on some show nobody watches, and now they whittle the 30k or so they made away on daytime lounging. I'm sure it's not entirely accurate, but it sounds good. :)

Cool read. I was wondering this myself the other day when I had to run over to Eaton Centre to pick up a power supply. When I got there on a Tuesday at 2:30pm I was shocked how many people were in the mall, and not only were they in the mall they were clearly shopping. How do they afford to shop at Banana Republic, FCUK and Townshoes and not be working during the day?

I knew I should have sold my soul for a job where I screw people over for a mint from 9-12 and go shopping for the rest of the day.
