Radio Free Skaro #40 - the Drums! the Drums!

The drums! Glimpses of Gallifrey, the Master at his hammy finest, a Prime Minister gone mad and a wizened Doctor...the Sound of Drums was a chaotic grab bag of fun. And so was this podcast, as Steven and Warren ramble with little rhyme or reason and speculate wildly as to the future of the show, the nature of the Toclafane, and other ponderous matters. We even managed to throw a couple of promos into the mix this time. Enjoy! (feed, web, direct download)

Heh, this is the first week I've been able to update the URLs on the Facebook group before you've made the post here. iTunes is faster than freyburg.com it seems.

More likely itunes is just faster than Warren typing on a keyboard.

Just a note - "Last of the Time Lords" is longer than usual, 51 and a half minutes. Both my prefered torrent sites are either down or going through beta testing, so now I'm ever so slightly nervous about Saturday...

Torrent sites are a dime a dozen to say the least, I doubt you'll have any issues acquiring a copy. I'll have an xvid by 2:30 at the latest, even though I don't want it. =)

I wasn't aware of the longer running time, and hopefully that's a good thing... the show runners at least know enough not to unnecessarily pad episodes (where possible anyway... all of series 1 ran short which is why there were extra trailers in the first place) so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume the extra 5-6 minutes will be well used.

Okay, Leisure Hive isn't from the new series, fair enough... but it's still one of the most-padded stories since 6/7/8-parters were stopped.

Man, Chris. Now you're gonna tell me that the greatest science fiction movie ever made--2001: A Space Odyssey--is full of padding.

Don't all movies have 20 minutes without talking at the beginning? And the end? And in at least one other spot throughout the movie?

Nah, 2001 is a slick fast-paced thrill ride for all ages and monkey-beating fans!

So Last of the Time Lords takes place a year after The Sound of Drums... does that mean we'll have more gaps that won't get filled and more questions that won't be answered?

So this year's Christmas special is entitled "Voyage of the Damned", and involves the Titanic.

The xvid has been downloaded... I think it's time to watch.

I see Wikipedia already has the plot line on the page for the episode...

Sweet zombie jesus was that ever HORRIBLE. I mean, there's bad... there's worse, then there's Last of the Time Lords (and then there's Christmas Invasion/Runaway Bride/New Earth bad below that). I mean, how dare they serve us that pap? And the SUPERMAN ENDING? WTF?!!? Steven called that one and by gar I never actually expected it to happen. I can't even think straight with this disgusting pure shite of an episode still running through my head. And what's with the climax at 2/3 of the way through the episode? It's a frigging Return of the King denoument after denoument series... just horrible!

A very deserved and solid 1/5 for Last of the Time Lords. RTD shouldn't wait another year before leaving, the fans should be burning him in effigy and forcing his removal.

Oddly enough, I didn't completely hate the Face of Boe reveal. Except of course for the implications of the birth of a baby boemina as mentioned in The Long Game. And of course the hand and ring at the end was intriguing.

I feel like i need to take a thousand showers to get the stink of that episode off me.

Definitely a bit of a letdown. Not without some decent moments, but that whole "Doctor as an embryo in a cage/Jesus returneth" thing was lame in the extreme.

While OG is reporting on the Kylie news, the few articles that were online at second-rate news sites have since been "pulled". Did someone jump the gun?

Indeed, there is a press embargo until midnight U.K. time. So the press stories should hit the airwaves around 5 p.m. here on the western parts of Canada. And Kylie's official site now confirms the story: http://www.kylie.com/2006_site/news_ecm_item.htm?view=javascript&item=1688265

Everybody's jumping a brand new shark now, come on baby do the Doctormotion, I know you'll get to like it if you give it a chance now...

Sigh.

I said it on Usenet and I'll say it here. The fans should not allow RTD to ruin our childhood memories any further. The revolution should be started and he should be removed, forcibly if needed, from Doctor Who. I give the man eternal thanks for being the driving force behind the resurrection of the series but enough is enough. Too much has happened to ruin the series.

I almost long for the latter JNT era!

So the question remains -- given the penchant for Kylie by gay men, is this move just another step in his gay agenda?

I wonder if the CBC will pick up on it... they sometimes do when it comes to major DW casting announcements.

Heh....gay agenda. I have my doubts that RTD has an agenda as such, just different sensibilities than us vagina-appreciators. I'm not a fan of Kylie Minogue, but I wouldn't go so far as to say RTD has ruined my childhood. George Lucas beat him to that one.

Btw, we were felled by the echo demons while recording tonight's podcast, so we're planning to do it again tomorrow night. Crossed fingers!

I agree it was quite a tumble.....but it wasn't as bad as "Fear Her." Then again, we expected nothing from Fear Her (which is precisely what we got), wheras this one frittered away 5 episodes worth of build-up.

I might be one of the few out there but I've never hated Fear Her. It's not stellar by any means but it had some good drama in it, and really reminded me of the ultra low budget focus-on-the-psychological early Hartnell days. Taken for what it is, it's a fine episode, and certainly better than a couple of the other lesser series 2 stories...

It's official... our new companion for series 4 is DONNA FROM THE RUNAWAY BRIDE. OMGWTF WHY OH WHY?

I guess this means we save 5 minutes in an episode setting up introductions and a back story.
