Radio Free Skaro #45 - Gridlock commentary and other sundry bits

One of our favorites from Season Three goes under the microscope as Warren and Steven subject "Gridlock" to their witty, nay brilliant commentary. We also veered off into a few other topics off the top, including "Life on Mars" (which Warren is watching and quite enjoying, thank you very much) and the differences between the look of British and American TV. Fore more detail on that subject, check out the discussion on Metafilter, found here.

Next week, expect some venomous bile as we watch and comment upon "Daleks in Manhattan," one of the lowlights of the season. (feed, web, direct download)

- The woman with the forget drug -- why does it not kick in when she's holding the sticker, which happens to be touching her skin?

- Why did lenora crichlow's character have the honesty patch (other than plot convenience)?

- Martha's kidnappers expect it to take years to get off the motorway, but it takes like a couple hours, that disparity always bothered me... obviously the story can't take place over many years, but a happy medium would be more appropriate. sure, the exits are closed which would add time to a journey, but they don't know that going in. The car gets fast lane access just before the 21m mark... assuming we're not going in real time, that's really not long into their journey even if we assume 5 or 10 times the amount of time passes in the story as passes in reality. Obviously the 5 years or whatever is there for shock value but really stands up to no scrutiny

- i don't hate whimsy, i've said multiple times i dug it in last of the time lords (at least i liked it to a point), and there are loads of wonderful and appropriate times throughout the 40-odd year history where it plays very well

- Although she's one of the younger ones out there, Nicola Bryant definitely aged well. She's quite fetching at almost 45. And, according to her trivia notation on IMDB, she was apparently considered for the role of Janeway on Star Trek Voyager. I think the show might have been more tolerable if that happened.

Ah, I know you don't hate whimsy, but exaggeration is the essence of comedy. That and jokes involving the human butt. :)

And Bryant on Voyager? Wow, that would have been cool. I might actually have watched the show, for one.

Heh, I have to try to defend my (ahem) honour somehow, right? =)

Initially I didn't watch Voyager, but now that it's all over the place like the other Trek series, I've seen the occasional episodes and some of them are okay. Nothing that compares to the best of the best from DS9 (still the cream of the crop in my book), but nevertheless okay.

Finally! Someone who agrees with me that DS9 was the best of Trek!

Please, if it ain't Kirk, Spock, and McCoy..I ain't cool wid' it. Except for First Contact. :)

Also, Ben Kingsley as Davros? Just this once, The Sun, be right!

The Sun has been correct on occasion, but this one seems a little far-fetched. However Derek Jacobi seemed a little far-fetched when his name first got thrown about so you never know.

Given the DW universe is down to one Dalek (barring another pull-more-Daleks-out-of-his-ass move by RTD such as what happened in Bad Wolf and Army of Ghosts) having Davros back to reinvigorate the species makes some sense.

I agree, DS9 was the best of the Trek Universe.

Derek Jacobi didn't seem out-of-place to me when his casting was announced. He's done television before. Ben Kingsley tends to be more film oriented, and of a higher profile. Plus I can't imagine such a big name being brought in merely to wear the prothetics of a Davros. Though maybe we will be treated to "Genesis of Davros". Now there's an idea!

Except the Dalek chronology has been unidirectional since Genesis back in 1975, so I doubt we'll see a genesis of Davros plot line (except maybe in flashback as a small portion of an episode). Then again with RTD at the helm we could see damn near anything, though he's been very consistent on not going back on established Dalek history which makes me think we could be safe from his revisionism. All we know is Skaro is gone, Davros escaped the Imperial Dalek mothership in Remembrance, and that's it... the options are wide open for the return of Davros without having to resort to a story about his 'creation'. Not to mention he was alluded to in Daleks in Manhatteh/Evolution of the Daleks so it makes the most sense that when/if we see him his story will take place after the events of Remembrance and other subsequent Dalek stories.

This is just me fantasizing, but I'd much prefer a "Genesis of Davros" story than a Helen Raynor two-part successor to "Evolution of the Daleks" that brings Davros in to rescue the Dalek species. But if you've been enjoying the current linear Dalek storylines, then I'm sure you'll be satisfied with what RTD and his team come up with.

And what might RTD come up with, you may ask? Well, the Daleks will be on the edge of extinction and Davros will come along to save them by recycling human beings for genetic material. They've only done this Dalek storyline twice in the new series, so surely they can do it again!

Hmm, a rumoured Davros box set. First we get a Master box set from the classic series and then we have the return of the Master in the revamped TV series.

Coincidence?
