Radio Free Skaro #49 - is about 42

Steven, Warren and the supremely jaunty Chris tackle 42, a madcap romp through a spaceship hurtling towards a dying sun, for this the 49th episode of Radio Free Skaro. We also tackle the recent announcement of a "gap year" for the series involving three specials in 2009, along with confirmation of the fourth and fifth series. And of course we ramble off-topic as usual about matters of great import. (feed, web, direct download).

By the way, the podcast is also available at the work-in-progess Radio Free Skaro blog, which you can also get to via www.radiofreeskaro.com. Eventually the plan is to move everything related to the podcast over to that blog, but in the meantime, feel free to comment here, or there, or on both sites.

Just to let you know Warren, there's a typo in each of the anchor tag and the destination url for rediofreeskaro.com in the body of the message. Just saying. =)

And for those who want my notes about the clock/timer, here you go:

Clock tracking:
1m42 - 42m27 remaining (44m09 end point)
3m33 - 40m28 remaining (44m01 end point)
5m48 - 34m32 remaining (40m29 end point) - lost 3m32s
7m30 - 32m51 remaining (40m21 end point)
9m29 - 30m51 remaining (40m20 end point)
10m33 - 29m47 remaining (40m20 end point)
11m32 - 28m50 remaining (40m22 end point)
13m15 - 27m07 remaining (40m22 end point)
15m32 - 24m52 remaining (40m24 end point)
23m18 - 17m06 remaining (40m24 end point)
27m28 - 12m56 remaining (40m24 end point)
29m07 - 11m17 remaining (40m24 end point)
31m25 - 8m58 remaining (40m23 end point)
32m52 - 7m31 remaining (40m23 end point)
35m36 - 4m48 remaining (40m24 end point)
36m14 - 4m10 remaining (40m24 end point)
36m39 - 3m44 remaining (40m23 end point)
38m05 - 2m19 remaining (40m24 end point)
39m01 - 1m23 remaining (40m24 end point)
39m16 - 1m07 remaining (40m23 end point)
40m25 - 0m01 remaining (40m26 end point)

(The first number is the time elapsed since the start of the episode, the second is the amount remaining on the timer, the third is the elapsed time for the episode when the time should run out based on the first two numbers.)

Of course, my typo in my note about Warren's typo was purely intentional. =)

Now, about the typo in the title of the podcast as shown in iTunes... =)

The answer about the digital switchover in the UK is 2012... sort of. They're doing it in phases and you can find out more at http://www.freeview.co.uk/switchover if you're curious. Wales, for instance, is 2009; London is 2012.

Ack, I was wrong about the temperature scale. Zero degrees Kelvin is absolute zero and is also -273 degrees Celcius.

And about Martha's mobile phone number...

Martha's phone number - 07711 911 905, a valid (per the UK telephone numbering plan) mobile number, used mostly by Vodafone and O2

The truly interested can read (and try in vain to understand as it's quite convoluted) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_telephone_numbering_plan to learn a bit about the UK system.

With regards to the Doctor Who hiatus and its fifth season, here are a few clarifications as presented in the original press release from the BBC:

We are looking at four specials between the end of series four and the start of series five. The first is at Christmas 2008. To get this in the can before Tennant moves on to the RSC, I'm guessing that filming for season four will be extended past its usual March completion date and into April. Normally, the Christmas specials have been filmed in July, but Tennant will be playing Hamlet at that point.

2009 will have the remaining three specials. Some slightly odd phrasing in the press release suggests that RTD will be writing all of these: "In 2009, Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies."

As for season five, the BBC have stated that they cannot confirm that Tennant will remain in the part after these series of specials.

So my current supposition is that the gap year will be used to retool Doctor Who. This may involve gearing up for HD, replacing the executive team (e.g. producer and head writer), getting a new lead actor, etc. There have been heavy suggestions, just rumour mind, that RTD and Collinson et al. wish to move on from Doctor Who.

OMG, there are rumours of Web of Fear being found, presumably complete. Not much has been said yet that I've seen but there was a note at http://www.drwho-online.co.uk/news/news.htm about it... can it be true? The UNIT genesis story! Yeti! That would be fantastic if true.

Well, it seemed like a forgone conclusion that CBC would air the Series Three finale of Doctor Who in an abbreviated form. The one hour timeslot and need for commercials would force this concession.

But in a twist, the CBC will be airing an omnibus finale on Monday, September 24 from 8 to 10 p.m., combining "Sound of Drums" with "Last of the Time Lords". Perhaps they will do the right thing and show a more complete version of the latter. Wishful thinking perhaps.

Hey Chris, your last comment got flagged for moderation but it was my bad; I set the filter to keep any comment with more than two links in it to not be published. Sounds fair but I guess it counts the "URL:" field in the comment header too so I've bumped the limit up.

(Apologies in advance if anyone has trouble commenting; the spam was horrible so I actually sat down and tried to figure out how to use the filtering on this blogging engine before we upgrade to Wordpress. It seems to be catching a lot more now, but we may get the occasional legit comment caught as well...)
