The iPhone 4 is set to drop in Canada tomorrow, and we still don’t know how much the plans will cost, what data plans will be included or if the Big Four wireless vendors have any other tricks up their sleeve. Don’t count on being pleasantly surprised.

?After all, these are the same companies that blithely announced ridiculous data plans a month before the Canadian iPhone 3G introduction, and then were soundly spanked by the blogerati and Twitter folk. They won’t repeat that PR disaster; instead they’ll wait until the last minute and then drop a crappy plan on early adopters who won’t be able to resist the phone’s siren call.

And if you’re looking to save money on a discount service, forget it. Wind doesn’t work with the iPhone 4, so even if you buy the phone unlocked you won’t be able to dictate terms. And if you think Rogers will give you a reasonable deal, think again. This is a company that responded to Netflix coming to Canada by cutting their download caps, rather than attempting to compete.

Welll..no. But this guy seems to understand that changes are afoot, ones that could be potentially fantastic for Canada.

According to the cover of the Atlantic, the economic crapstorm we’re currently weathering is going to not only throw piles of people out of work and cause general misery, it’s also going to remake America’s geography. Richard Florida, who you might remember from his book “The Rise of the Creative Class,” asserts that regions like the Sun Belt, which experienced massive growth during the housing bubble, will be in dire shape in years to come, as will old industrial cities like Detroit. New York might take less of a beating, due to the big influx of creative types and industries other than finance, though frankly I think Florida might be overstating his case in that instance. Strangely, though the cover says “Toronto wins,” due to multiculturalism and a diversified economy (oh yeah, and Canadian banks are a hell of a lot better off than American banks), there’s barely any mention of the city in the article itself.

The NFB is branching out from Hinterland Who’s Who (actually, I have no idea if they have anything to do with HWW, I just love the music at the beginning of the mini-films) and other cold Canadian fare to present RIP: A Remix Manifesto. It looks like an interesting take on the copyright battle, though unfortunately there’s no way (as of yet) to view the whole film online. Here’s the trailer…

More writing from yours truly in the mainstream media, this time in BC Tech. First up, an article about Lambda Solutions, who aim to become the “Ebay of knowledge.” I also wrote a “this season’s hottest gadgets” that unfortunately got a little truncated for the web edition.

After 100 years of the affluent rushing to the suburbs, many major cities are experiencing a reversing trend, where young urban professionals opt for smaller living quarters, more densely packed living areas, and mixed-use communities. The New Republic has a decent article about this trend of “trading places” in their newest issue. Vancouver, where I live, has been on the forefront of this for a while now. Of course, what rarely gets mentioned is how damned expensive all this is….Vancouver is one example, but the best one would be Manhattan, where it’s virtually impossible to live or own a place without being a millionaire. Still, it’s an interesting read.
