Patent madness this week, and a deep dive by Todd into the machinations and tribulations surrounding high tech and patent law. Here’s a pile of links for you on that subject…
- Samsung and Apple’s battle means worldwide grief for the Korean tablet maker
- more grief for Samsung in the EU
- Google’s Andy Rubin plays fast and loose with violating patents
throw Apple cops, Cory Doctorow on online identity, Amazon tablets, and Michael Arrington being a dink into the mix and you’ve got our first one hour show!
Like every other podcast on the internet, we led off with discussion on Steve Jobs resignation from Apple, then branched off into whether Apple can stay “Apple,” as well as discussing the oft-rumoured Apple television set that may or may not happen. Speaking of TV, Google told the television industry to go to hell (except it didn’t). We also looked at the new Mozilla WebAPI, an awesome gaming laptop from Razer, and much, much more.
Chip gets a TouchPad, HP gives up on PCs (and TouchPads), Robert Scoble doesn’t love Twitter anymore, Chrome extensions can be riddled with malware, and Apple might be making its own chipsets for Macbooks after all.
The iCloud rises! As does the Apple TV, wifi and Canadian politicians, MTV supplanted by Youtube, and much, much more!
Rumours of ARM processors in Mac laptops, new iMacs, Chinese riots, and one hell of a lot of talk about comic books, all in the latest episode of Fruitygamer!
Holiday cheer and general merriment abound as the boys cover World of Goo on the iPad, EA’s iOS fire sale, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on the iPhone, the confusing and pointless Playstation app, predictions for 2011, and Doctor Who: Mazes of Time. Neat!
No video this week, due to weak internet capabilities in China. Next week, quite possibly some video.
Games are the main thing being downloaded on the iPad, but you won’t be able to grab iDOS and play old DOS classics anymore on your iPad. Movie games, Batman, Trainyard and Todd rides Bane (in his mind). And for the second week in a row, video!
Can’t believe I forgot to post this earlier, but I wrote an article for the Japan Times last week about Sharp’s Galapagos tablet, a pad device aimed straight at the Japanese market. Sharp claims otherwise, but “Galapagos” has become a term to define the uniqueness and weakness of the Japanese mobile phone market, which created some of the most advanced and esoteric phones on the market, in a sealed environment where innovation was allowed to flourish but never interact with the outside world.
With the onset of the iPhone, that market is crumbling. I personally see many, many iPhones everywhere in Tokyo, and that has to strike fear into the heart of every Japanese cell provider (other than Softbank, presumably making a killing by offering the iPhone exclusively in Japan.)
So I don’t hold out much hope for this Sharp tablet. They may know something I don’t, but I can’t see a device like this competing in any way with the iPad.
