Vancouver music legend Chris Peterson sat down for a chinwag with EVP host Jonny Vancouver to talk about his music, the internet’s effect on the music industry, and how he manages to work on multiple projects while keeping a day job. Shot with the JVC GY-HM100U, cut in Final Cut Studio, and graded with Magic Bullet Suite.
Andrew Warner runs Mixergy, a show consisting of Skype interviews with entrepreneurs building startups that are changing the way people do business. His latest show features Leo Laporte, who worked for Tech TV for years before being laid off. Rather than take that lying down, Leo moved right into podcasting and in a few short years has built up something of a new media empire starting with This Week In Tech, also known as TWIT. In this episode of Mixergy, Leo explains how he delivers well-produced niche content at a lower price than the networks are capable of, and what other new media producers can do to emulate his success.
Full disclosure: I worked with Leo on-air and behind the scenes last year on “The Lab with Leo Laporte,” and still maintain occasional contact with him. I also met and had a great conversation (and a few beers) with Dane Golden, Leo’s right-hand-man at TWIT, at Macworld 2008. But before any of that happened, Leo’s move into podcasting made me think that it was possible for myself and fellow nerd @legopolis (and later, @dubbayoo) to start Radio Free Skaro, my own podcast devoted to all things Doctor Who, as well as concentrate on web video as the dominant growth area for my own company, Freyburg Media.
So I vowed a while back to make Freyburg.com more business friendly and focused in it’s subject matter. As you can see, that resulted in….sod all. This blog sees the most activity when I put my random thoughts on it, and at any rate who cares if it gets a bunch of pageviews? I started it as a way to force myself to write, and with the advent of my own video production company ( and the subsequent decline of posting on here) it looks like I need to do so again. So from now on, expect more posts about more stuff. Whether, in the words of the esteemed Colin Baker, “you like it or not.”
So since I left the Electric Playground I’ve been fairly busy, which goes counter to the idea that if you leave a day job you instantly become a video game playing, couch dwelling loafabout. Some of what I’m doing, like blogging and shooting video for Techvibes, doing videos for friends like Khare Communications, doing some video tutorials and filming events, is out on the net and viewable by all.
Some of what I’m doing or have planned I can’t quite get into yet…because nothing’s been finalized or (in one particular case) I’m the driving force and haven’t quite finalized how I’ll do it.
In the meantime I’m going to try to keep updating the site with video-centric news, but bear with me. It’s not easy editing almost every day and then trying to wrap my head around a blog post.
In a word, self-employment. I’ve been really busy and haven’t had a lot of time to post anything. I’m also trying to refocus the site towards video and video production, rather than the catch-all approach I’ve taken before. That’s mostly due to the fact that I’ve started Freyburg Media (www.freyburgmedia.com), my own video production company. So there may be a little less posting for the next couple of weeks, but rest assured I’ll not only try to find cool stuff to write about but also post videos I’ve produced that are more fun and less business-related.
Here’s the demo reel for my video production company, Freyburg Media. Just a sampler of the stuff I’ve worked on and the skills I can bring to a corporate video, podcast, or broadcast television segment.
