Back in 1960, a state of the art computer cost millions of dollars, weighed thousands of pounds, and was slower (by an order of magnitude) than an average chip in today’s cellphones. Physicist and science popularizer Michio Kaku (whose BBC series “Visions of the Future” is awesome, btw) breaks down where computing is going in the next ten years. Computers will be ubiquitous, mostly invisible, and profoundly shaping and transforming our civilization. Sounds good to me.

Ian Goldin, one of the many smart people to speak at the always excellent TED conference, lays down the challenges facing us in the next 30 years. The takeaway? The coming decades are full of amazing technologies, but if we don’t find new ways to co-operate, we’re all screwed.

Amazing what these telephones can do nowadays! If nowadays is 1970something. If I’d seen this at the time it would have blown my 5-year-old mind. Though one thing the video does get right is blasting out the funky jazz tunes while working at home. That I do everyday.
