Kickstarting!

by

Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, for those not in the know, are two very popular ways to fund a project. While games, art objects, books and other creative pursuits can all be funded through these platforms, I’m more interested in indie movies, and have contributed small amounts ($15 for one film, $30 for another) to two projects.

I’m not doing so purely out of altruism…the systems set up a series of rewards based on how much you contribute, and my baseline is a 1080p digital copy of the film once it’s done. So really, I’m pre-ordering a film at the same time I help it get made. I don’t even have a DVD player anymore (other than the one inside my Macbook Pro) so for me, 1080p digital is the way to go.

Here’s the films I’m supporting, in my own small way…

Indie Game: The Movie is a documentary that follows three game creators through the trials and tribulations of making a game by themselves and then putting their creation out into the world. The look of the film is amazing and I’m fascinated by the subject matter, so I’m really looking forward to seeing this flick.

Ghosts with Shit Jobs” is from indie tour-de-force Jim Munroe, the brains behind Nomediakings.org and one of the creators of Infest Wisely, another “lo-fi sci-fi” film featuring talking cats, nanites, and cycling activists. I love the facts that “Ghosts” is more about ideas and speculation than a showcase for dumb effects, and I’ve put money down to get a digital copy of the film when it’s released in the next couple of months. And you can contribute too, if you’d like.

By the way, if you want to see an interview with Jim Munroe I did when Infest Wisely came to Vancouver in 2007, see below. I also noticed that I was enthusiastic about iMovie in the description, something I doubt will ever happen again.
