Radio Free Skaro #20 - Pertwee Ponderings

Our retrospective on Doctor Number Three, Jon Pertwee, rings in at an astounding 53-odd minutes of jib-jabber on his tenure. And what an era it was! By far the most suave cat ever to pilot the TARDIS, we pay tribute to the many and various adventures of Pertwee's Time Lord. Next week, part one of our look Back at the Tom Baker Years. I enjoyed a lot of Pertwee era I remember watching a few of the episodes that were in colour only to find out a few years later that the colour prints of the episodes were lost.
I think that the only thing that I didn't like about the Pertwee era way the companion Joe. I found her to be more of a pain in the butt than an asset for the Doctor.

Jo was a bit useless, but then, who else could Pertwee patronize? Because neither Liz Shaw or Sarah Jane were having any of that.

Very true....and Jo was endearingly useless, though a bit of a throwback to the 60's companions. She was no Bonnie Langford though, thank ye gods. :)

Jo was there to be the sexy assistant (as alluded to by Warren) as Liz never fulfilled that role, and Letts & Dicks (as they've said in interviews) were old fashioned and wanted their women in short skirts and to be screamers (take that as you will). Sarah Jane's character was begrudgingly brought in to try to get the show up to speed with society (since it was generally out of touch despite trying to be relevant). So, Jo was there and the character was perfect and exactly what she was supposed to be. Despite her now looking like a dragon, Katy Manning was definitely cute back in the day.

I did find it odd that you guys raved over Inferno yet panned those who thought The Daemons was fantastic... that was somewhat hypocritical. You guys are editorializing, so it's perfectly valid, and I certainly fall into the same camp as you regarding The Daemons, but I've always found Inferno to be rather boring and excessively long. That could have so easily lost 2 or even 3 episodes without the story losing it's impact. That being said, the alter egos were fantastic ideas (though perhaps a little too early in the run for the characters), and Courtney & Levene did very well as their dark doppelgangers.

Loved the discussion of Frontier in Space, it's among my favourite Pertwee stories (I dug Malcolm Hulke as a writer), but everyone's always so unfair to Planet of the Daleks. Sure it's not good, but it's not *that* bad. Most of Pertwee's era is throwaway garbage and Planet of the Daleks certainly doesn't stand above most of the other stories, but (missing episode aside) it had some good intrigue, what with The Doctor being out of it at the start, the companion having to be resolute and try to take the lead (which is against the role), and of course some historical exposition with the Thals who hadn't been seen in a decade.

The same applies to Death to the Daleks... no, it's not good but for some reason I've always liked it. Plus, Lis Sladen in a bikini. Yay!

And why no mention of the missing (well, b&w-only) episode of Invasion of the Dinosaurs?

I think I may have mentioned the missing episode 1 of "Dinosaurs", didn't I? It may have happened in take 1, as the last half of the podcast had to be redone a couple days later. Whoops! Did I spill a secret? As long as I keep quiet about the fact that Warren actually died in a freak yachting accident two months ago...

It might have been in take 1, yeah... nothing in the final edit anyhow. Sad to hear about Warren, but that's a damn good voice synthesizer you've got there.

Not bad, eh? I've been trying pawn one of those synths off on Stephen Hawking, but no takers. Anyway, RIP Warren.
