Apple's design sense

Apple's ace in the hole has always been design. With a few notable exceptions (like the Dirty Hippie iMac) even Apple's crappier products have at least looked good and held industrial and interface diesgn to a higher standard than their computational peers. MIT's Technology Review peers inside the secretive world of Apple's design team and explains how Apple's been able to maintain its edge.

I was talking to one person while helping them out with their Mothers new Dell and she herself owned a mac, and some of the complants that she had for her macbook Pro was that the case of the MB was to thin that the lid of the MB bent to much on the edges and that the bottom for the Track Pad had overly sharp edges. as well when holding it she always felt it was sliding out of her hands. Despite my being a mac owner I have to say that when it comes to Apples choice of focus on design of their MacBooks and Pro line that Apple is focusing more on look than functionality. And in the end this could hurt them. It was probably one of the major reasons that I desided to go with a desktop system than a portable one with Apple.

Okay Vancouver-based Apple fanboys, if you've not read the news yet, here it is:

The only Apple store I've ever been to was a few years back in Palo Alto when I was down in the Bay area for MacWorld 2004. The SF store was still under construction so I couldn't yet go to it.

There's still also the rumour of a store in Calgary which I've never seen confirmed...

Jameson House is sorta out of the way for an Apple Store...it's in Coal Harbour, which is one of the most expensive parts of downtown but isn't all that densely populated with retail.

But they are building that section up, and that building will be a high-end location designed by Arthur Erikson, so I can see Uncle Steve's eye to the future on this one.

I did check out the Apple Store on 5th Ave, which is apparently the flagship location for the States. It's underground, with a big cube up top that you walk into to get into it.

It's kinda cool, and as you can see in the gallery, it's pretty big. In the end, it's just a store, though if you can name an Apple product, it's there somewhere. It's also supposedly a good place to spot Mac-using celebrities, and indeed when we were there we saw Pat Sajack and what we're guessing is his son puttering with a Macbook.

Of course, I couldn't resist calling up Freyburg.com on one of the 30 inch monitors and posing by it dork that I am....
