Radio Free Skaro #33 - that's a big spider

Dr. Who returns to the tried and true with a nice little monster romp involving fountains of youth, genetic tomfoolery and a bit of the ultraviolence. Not to mention a corker of a trailer for the second half of the season. Some Eurovision nonsense is getting in the way of broadcasting the episode next week, so we've decided to make this an all-request show. Email, send mp3s, or do whatever else you can think of to help us create next week's DIY podcast. (feed, web, direct download)

I didn't get around to watching the episode until today... I've been disinclined.

Nonetheless, it was an average episode, the positives outweighed the negatives, and I happily gave it a 3 on OG.

The Spinal Tap reference... yes, it's obscure enough that not everyone will get it, it's 23 years old now and some of the lingo has permeated our language quite effectively, and I didn't hate it. I like Warren's comment about how such things take away from the drama and action for a cheap gag, but it's not the first time it's been done in the series (old or new) so I'm okay with it. I happen to love This Is Spinal Tap, so I may also be biased.

As for the "reverse the polarity" throwback, I loved it. I love throwbacks more than I hate them and Tennant saying the line just felt natural.

Rank: Third best of the series behind Gridlock and ahead of Evolution of the Daleks. Yes, Evolution outranks The Shakespeare Code in my world. =)

I was just talking to Jean-Paul about possible ideas for you guys, chiefly suggesting to him we proffer ourselves as guests in a panel-format show, but he's not wanting to do that... he did, however, make one suggestion about you guys doing a retrospective of Tennant's first series.

You guys covered those in a staggered format, so maybe something more concise and all-in-one-go might be a good idea. That's not too dissimilar from the clip show notion battered about at the end of #33.

I do beg of you to not do a Torchwood retrospective since that show makes me want to do bad things when I think about it (though I rewatched the first episode a few weeks back and didn't hate it as much as the first go around). =)

I don't have any other ideas of my own to jot down here though, at least not for now. Sorry. Still, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not sure what I could offer but I'll offer up myself if you guys are stuck for ideas. Who knows... maybe a personal retrospective... how we all got into Who, what piqued our respective interests about the show, favourite Doctors and companions, that sort of thing. I guess that's an idea after all. =)

Maybe we'll have to use that "How did you get into Who?" idea the same week that David Tennant is directing - yes, directing - a Doctor Who Confidential about that very subject. Week 10, I believe.

Our first few shows were done analyzing Series 2, but really, we were ironing out the bugs in thsoe shows, so I could conceviably revisit them again. And I haven't even watched TW since it first went out. And yet there it sits on my DVD shelf, staring back at me.

Of course, we have to ask ourselves, is this finally the time that we, like the BBC, devote an entire show to the Eurovision Song Contest?

Yes, I think it is.

I have to say that I enjoyed "The Lazarus Experiment" it was far better than the Dalek story. Almost to the point where I have Zero interest in seeing another Dalek story ever again. I sort of get the feeling that this episode was just a lead off to what is going to be happen later in season than anything else, but htat could just be me.

Had a little trouble hearing Steven, his over all volume didn't seem constant and evey so often he seemed to almost drop off when he was talking.

As most of you probably have already found out, the third series of Doctor Who kicks off on CBC on Monday, June 18th at 8 p.m. Yay! Hustle starts a new series at 9 p.m. that same night. Given the timeslot, it looks like the CBC is skipping over The Runaway Bride. No big loss there, IMHO.

That is a christmas special that I wish I could forget. At least with Shark Attack 3 I got more laughs out of it for the bad and predictable writing.

I would agree, Runaway Bride had its moments (TARDIS whipping down the freeway FTW!) but overall..meh.

I was pondering what our show this week should be about, other than cursing up a storm about Eurovision, and I came across this idea. Why not have a show about our fanwankiest fantasies for the program, ridiculous monster battles, idiotic Tardis vs. Star Destroyer type arguments, etc etc. We spend all our time deriding fanwank...why not indulge for this one program? You guys could contribute your fanwank ideas and we could read it on air, and I could highlight some of the especially ridiculous fan videos and (shudder) fanfic out there.
