Radio Free Skaro #65 – Commentary of the Damned

by

With next to nothing in the way of news, the RFS crew brings you a full 71 minutes and change of rip-roaring commentary on the Doctor Who Xmas Special, “Voyage of the Damned.” Does it stand up after a week and a half? Is Warren’s Kylie jihad over and done with? Is Steven actually a computer programmed with nothing but Doctor Who facts? Tune in and find out! (feed, web, direct download)

Just in case Warren was feeling nostalgic:

For the video mode, select the [Comp B/R] setting at the bottom of the screen. Then click on the [Setup] button, go to the “BIN” tab and select “The King” from the list. Enjoy.

Warren says:

W00t! Ah, that’s some sweet stuff.

Jean-Paul Samson says:

Oh yeah, you might want to checkmark the “Sound” button to hear the monkey-grinder organ music that was typical of the era. I can’t quite get the keyboard/mouse control to work on my machine.

Buffalo Wings get there name from City where they originated from.

6 degrees of Doctor Who would be far to much.

Actually calling the meteors that hit the ship in a misnomer, Meteors are those objects that have entered the Earth atmosphere and through friction making it brightness up. Since they were fiery outside of the Earths atmosphere then they would be Comets.

I’m just hoping that max doesn’t come back as the new Davros.

This Podcast was just way to long.

Jean-Paul Samson says:

For Jabberwocky, who could have just read this synopsis in two minutes instead of sitting through a whole 75 minute podcast:

Warren says:

Well, if we’re doing a commentary for a 71 minute show, there’s not a lot we can do to trim it down. We only put in 4 minutes of our own jabber, really, unrelated to the Voyage of the Damned.

Also, Jean-Paul, that angrywhofan is some serious funny. 🙂

jabberwocky says:

I under stan that Warren the Episode is way to long. makes for a podcast that is to long. RTD did a bad, bad, oh so very bad thing by making the episode so long.

Chris Burgess says:

Unless we split it up and did 36 minutes in one podcast and the other 36 minutes in another, our hands are tied. Mind you, doing so would have helped compensate for the expected slow news week leading up to the Torchwood premiere.

But then that’d be silly. All I can say is Mike’s remark is too whiny. It’s not our fault the episode is nearly 72 minutes! =)

jabberwocky says:

Not blaming you guys, I’m blaming RTD.

I am Steven says:

Just wait until you hear next week’s episode – commentary on all 14 episodes of Trail of a Time Lord, back to back to back. No pausing!

Chris Burgess says:

That’s going to make our podcast doing descriptive video service for the 9 missing episodes of The Dalek Masterplan seem like a cakewalk!

BTW, I call dibs on pointing out the book about Canadian Geese in Mysterious Planet.

jabberwocky says:

Hey can’t you consider mentioning the Canadian Geese cancon in a Doctor Who episode?

I am Steven says:

They mention Ottawa in “Claws of Axos”, Toronto in “Seeds of Death”, and an “Algonquin” station in “The Ambassadors of Death” – and that’s only three episodes CBC aired after 1965.

Chris Burgess says:

Seeds of Death also mentioned a second Canadian city… the first and only time that I can remember two Canadian cities being named in a single DW story. I didn’t think Toronto was one of them (Vancouver and Ottawa? Ottawa for sure, as I recall they misspell it Ottowa… the other might have been Montreal or Quebec, I can’t recall). I don’t want to have to pull out my DVD to refresh my memory, perhaps Steven’s recall will help out here.

Jean-Paul Samson says:

You want obscure? Back in the Hartnell days, one script idea that was pitched was a historical to be set in Nova Scotia/New Brunswick. I think it must have been a Lucarotti.

I Am Steven says:

I seem to recall the computer robot spitting out a stream of cities at T-Mat control on the moon….what a great episode! I’ve only just finished “The Keys of Marinus”, and I’m already looking forward to Seed of Death!

And that Nova Scotia episode turned out to be “The Daleks”, with the Thals having been Acadians in the first draft, and the Daleks were originally…Vikings.

They weren’t up on their colonial history back in those days….

Jean-Paul Samson says:

You might not have been too far off on the plot for the Nova Scotia story, Steven. All I remember is that it had something to do with the Bay of Fundy and the tidal bore.

I Am Steven says:

That actually rings a bell. Good thing they made a Western episode instead (actually, “The Gunfighters” flat out rules, and anyone who doesn’t crack a smile when watching it deserves to be bludgeoned.)
