New iPhone in September? According to some telecom guy in the UAE, yes. According to us, no. Warren rescues his Boot Camp partition from BSOD hell, Todd makes a game, and Chip is victorious in getting publishers to charge us all more money. All in this week’s Fruitygamer!
Precisely none of you may be wondering how we make FruityGamer here at Freyburg Media. Well, I’m here to tell you the thinking, process and methodology I used. My methods and tools may differ from what’s available to you, but you’ll at least get a general idea as to how to pull of your own video podcasts.
When myself and my business partner made “This is Yaletown” we did so thinking the internet would soon push up its production values to the levels of television, and that we’d better be ahead of the curve. But in fact this has not proven to be the case. People watch internet shows for many reasons, but slick production values (to a point) doesn’t seem to be a necessary part of the equation.
I figured that given my experience creating Radio Free Skaro there was no reason I couldn’t create similar podcasts on video and in audio form, and do so in such a way that they’re quick and easy to make.
Games are the main thing being downloaded on the iPad, but you won’t be able to grab iDOS and play old DOS classics anymore on your iPad. Movie games, Batman, Trainyard and Todd rides Bane (in his mind). And for the second week in a row, video!
Can’t believe I forgot to post this earlier, but I wrote an article for the Japan Times last week about Sharp’s Galapagos tablet, a pad device aimed straight at the Japanese market. Sharp claims otherwise, but “Galapagos” has become a term to define the uniqueness and weakness of the Japanese mobile phone market, which created some of the most advanced and esoteric phones on the market, in a sealed environment where innovation was allowed to flourish but never interact with the outside world.
With the onset of the iPhone, that market is crumbling. I personally see many, many iPhones everywhere in Tokyo, and that has to strike fear into the heart of every Japanese cell provider (other than Softbank, presumably making a killing by offering the iPhone exclusively in Japan.)
So I don’t hold out much hope for this Sharp tablet. They may know something I don’t, but I can’t see a device like this competing in any way with the iPad.
New Macbook Airs? OS X 10.7? John Sculley taps out? EA in Tokyo? Yes!
BTW, we planned to do this episode on video as well as audio, but technology conspired against us. Next week for (maybe) sure!
Andrew Marr, host of the excellent Start the Week and former political editor for the BBC doesn’t like bloggers. While I see his point about abusive, nonsensical and and angry commenters, his outright dismissal of new media as a legitimate medium is laughable at best.
More to the point, it’s the typical elitist broadcasting reaction to a democratized media world. The playing field, while still imperfect, is much more level than ever before, and traditional broadcasters do not like the fact that they now face competition from all corners. Some of that competition is indeed “pimply, aggressive and single” but that’s always been true. The larger point is that the self-appointed position of cultural curator has been snatched from the hands of broadcasters and put into the hands of the people. It might not be pretty, but it’s reality, and no amount of bitching from upper-class talking heads will change that.
Having worked in broadcasting myself, I completely welcome this change. Broadcasting has its role and will continue to provide a valuable service, but it’s long past time we were able to create our own content, express our own opinions, and transmit our own shows. The expansion of mobile into every corner of our lives will only accelerate the process. And if Andrew Marr doesn’t like it, tough.

Update: Rogers is shockingly offering the $30 for 6gig deal again, along with a $20 offer to share that data with your iPad. So I guess I was wrong. BUt enjoy the invective below regardless. Plus they could have told us this a few weeks ago.

The iPhone 4 is set to drop in Canada tomorrow, and we still don’t know how much the plans will cost, what data plans will be included or if the Big Four wireless vendors have any other tricks up their sleeve. Don’t count on being pleasantly surprised.
After all, these are the same companies that blithely announced ridiculous data plans a month before the Canadian iPhone 3G introduction, and then were soundly spanked by the blogerati and Twitter folk. They won’t repeat that PR disaster; instead they’ll wait until the last minute and then drop a crappy plan on early adopters who won’t be able to resist the phone’s siren call.
And if you’re looking to save money on a discount service, forget it. Wind doesn’t work with the iPhone 4, so even if you buy the phone unlocked you won’t be able to dictate terms. And if you think Rogers will give you a reasonable deal, think again. This is a company that responded to Netflix coming to Canada by cutting their download caps, rather than attempting to compete.
Here’s some helpful info on the iPhone 4 courtesy of iphoneincanada.ca. I won’t be buying the iPhone 4 tomorrow, as I’m waiting until we move to Tokyo next month and then picking up a unit via Softbank. But I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks of their new toy.
