In the town of Jahn FREYBURG (Saxonia-Anhalt) took place the 80th anniversary of the traditional “Jahn Memorial”. Gymnasts of all age groups from 15 to hundred years were active at the apparatusses. The guests came from 19 German country federations, but also from other European clubs. The traditional German club TSV Meissen came with a big delegation, although their gym was destroyed through the flood catastrophe. They need help, to continue their training ….

The oldest participant and winner in his age category was the 93 old Albert Jakob from the VfL Waiblingen. He was also the Turngest winner in May 2002 in Leipzig and will celebrate his 94th birthday in coming October.

Grand Theft Auto (trailer for the fourth game in the series due for release in a few short hours, btw) is by any measure a gaming success story, melding sandbox design, controversial subject matter and edgy marketing into a package that’s made Rockstar Games millions of dollars. But a new Wired piece examines just how the company’s rise to the top turned into a mess of egos and shifty deals.

Recently I’ve been taxing my brain with what subject I’d tackle for a video podcast. Unlike audio, I’m tied to a location (in this case, Vancouver, unless it’s a studio-bound news show) and time constraints, because video takes longer to cut together than audio.

I’m pretty much unimpressed with the “jabber into the webcam” style of video podcast. Other than Ze Frank, it seems to be the domain of teenage mopers and Youtube weirdos. And while a set-bound news show like “Wallstrip” or “Rocketboom” is a possibility, I’m not sure what ground hasn’t been covered in that area. Interview shows like “the Merlin Show” also seem to be doable, though I’d have to find a new person every week to harass (not actually that difficult.) Books are a possibility, as it’s an interesting niche and relatively easy to find new material for.

The upside of video podcasts is that slickness almost seems beside the point. There’s a base level of quality to aim for but beyond that the usual TV quick-cut stuff seems almost phony.

So help me out, huddled audience. If I was to do a video podcast, what would you want to see?

We end our retrospective with the denouement of Eccleston’s TARDIS tenure, and wax lyrical on the highlights (Father’s Day, Boom Town, Parting of the Ways) and lowlights (Bad Wolf…maybe?), as well as covering a bit of news, the building tension over the impending premiere of Season 3 this Saturday, and making you all suffer through sporadic coughing by Warren. As a guy who worked for years in TV and who has no time for film traditionalists, in addition to having an unhealthy love for computers, I know which dog I back in this fight. Filmmaker magazine details where the perpetual film vs. HD debate is at right now, and where both sets of technology are headed in the next few years.

Sony’s Playstation 3 roll-out has been one bad decision after another, from Ken Kutaragi announcing people will work extra hard to ge the console to poor sales to, well, this abomination of a commerical from Europe. (I’d embed the video, but Youtube’s formatting and my site’s don’t seem to get along all that well.)

Zuh? How in the hell is that supposed to sell anything, let alone a $600 game system? Ah, Sony. See you in the bargain bin.

Bruce Sterling, cyberpunk emeritus and all-around smart guy, has a video up on Youtube introducing Belgrade’s many buildings. Sterling is one of the best thinkers out there about the Internet, which is the very system that allows him to live and work in what was recently the center of a war zone. Also of note is his recent speech at SXSW, a decent listen by any measure.

I got in the habit of ignoring Google Video when it was announced a while back, but lately the place has become a goldmine for documentaries. Apparently I’m not the only person who noticed this, since this fine website has cataloged some of the best offerings.
